{"id":1890,"date":"2012-05-24T12:05:25","date_gmt":"2012-05-24T18:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.igivefirst.com\/?p=1890"},"modified":"2012-05-24T12:05:25","modified_gmt":"2012-05-24T18:05:25","slug":"the-power-of-social-media-in-charitable-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.igivefirst.com\/i\/the-power-of-social-media-in-charitable-giving\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Social Media in Charitable Giving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2012\/comlegiving.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, over two-thirds of Americans now use text-messaging and 9% have used texting to make charitable donations from their comle phones.<\/p>\n<p>This new trend in giving illustrates the power of social networking in\u00a0<a title=\"charitable giving\" href=\"http:\/\/www.igivefirst.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">charitable giving<\/a>.\u00a0 This Pew study, which analyzed the \u201cText to Haiti\u201d campaign launched after the 2010 earthquake, found that contributions made by comle phone were often quick decisions that spread virally through social network connections.\u00a0 Almost 75% of donors made contributions the same day they heard about the campaign, and 43% also encouraged other friends and family members to give.\u00a0 A majority of those surveyed have continued to give to other similar projects by using their comle phones.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.igivefirst.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/fears-put-brakes-on-charitable-giving-fears-put-brakes-on-charitable-giving\/\" target=\"_blank\">fears of scams can hurt charitable giving<\/a>, almost 76% of those surveyed said that they often make text message donations without doing much research before they give.\u00a0 Though the article did not examine the reasons behind their actions, it seems likely that the campaign\u2019s viral spread through social networks played an impact.
